Biography
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Türkmen was born in Kayseri, Turkiye. He completed his primary education at Develi Seyrani Primary School and his secondary education at Develi Imam Hatip High School. He later pursued technical high school studies in the Computer Department of Mersin Anatolian Technical High School, focusing on both software and hardware.
In 1996, he was admitted to the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Erciyes University, where he earned his bachelor's degree on July 17, 2001. Shortly after, on August 24, 2001, he began his academic career as a Research Assistant at the same university.
He completed his master's degree with a thesis titled “Analysis of Microwave Transmission Lines Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques” At a time when artificial intelligence was still an emerging field in the early 2000s, he became a pioneer in applying these techniques to engineering problems. His work resulted in 19 published journal articles, including 14 in high-impact, SCI-indexed journals, along with over 10 national and international conference papers.
During his Ph.D. studies, he further advanced the use of artificial intelligence algorithms to develop analytical and synthesis formulas for microwave transmission lines and antennas. These contributions were published in various international journals, with 22 articles indexed in SCI, as well as over 20 national and international conference presentations.
Between 2003 and 2009, while serving as a Research Assistant, he actively contributed to three European Union (EU) projects, one TÜBİTAK 1001 project, and two university-funded (BAP) research projects. In the EU-supported projects, he collaborated with NGOs to organize training programs aimed at enhancing the employment prospects of youth, women, and visually impaired individuals—making significant contributions to social responsibility initiatives.
In 2009, he moved to the United States and joined Boston University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as a Research Assistant Professor. There, he conducted research in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Hatice Altug, who was honored by then U.S. President Barack Obama in 2011 with the “Young Scientist of the Year” award. Their research focused on nanotechnology and biosensor applications.
In 2012, Prof. Dr. Türkmen returned to Turkey and founded Fotonik Teknoloji A.Ş. with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, aiming to commercialize his expertise in photonics and sensor technologies. Today, the company operates out of Erciyes Technopark and the Kayseri Organized Industrial Zone, producing and exporting a range of electronic devices, including television and satellite receiver boards, converters, electronic water meters, and ultrasonic calorimeters.
Fotonik Teknoloji A.Ş. continues its R&D efforts through support from KOSGEB, TÜBİTAK, and EU-funded projects. Under the Ministry’s Technology-Oriented Industry Move initiative, the company has launched investment projects focused on producing import-substitute electronic control boards for the white goods industry.
In addition to his academic and entrepreneurial endeavors, Prof. Dr. Türkmen serves as Chairman of the Vocational Committee of the Kayseri Chamber of Industry (KAYSO), and as Chairman of the Audit Committee in the Executive Board of the Erciyes Organized Industrial Zone.
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Türkmen is married and has two children. He is fluent in English and has intermediate proficiency in Arabic.
