Abstract:

According to Analytical Psychology, which was created by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung (1875- 1961), one's unconscious is divided into two as personal and collective. While the personal unconscious consists of the experiences of the person himself, the collective unconscious is thought to be composed of the first images i.e the archetypes inherited from the experiences of his ancestors from the time of the first human being until today. It is also possible to see the existence of these archetypes in the field of literature as well as dreams and religions. The most important archetypes of the collective unconscious are shadow, anima-animus and self archetypes, which have a great impact on the individuation process of becoming an individual. Persona is another archetype in consciousness but important for the individual to recognize himself. This thesis, focuses on the analysis of Jun'ichirō Tanizaki (1886- 1965)'s novels Chijin no Ai, Manji and Kagi by archetypal symbolism.
