Özet:

This study was conducted to determine the response of maize (Zea mays L.) under different sprinkler irrigation times and plant densities conditions in Kirkuk Governorate / Iraq in 2021 and 2022. In the first experimental year (in 2012), in order to identify the variety with higher yield and strength under the limited irrigation conditions, an experiment was conducted in a randomized block design (RCBD) with three replications. Five approved yellow maize cultivars (AlFajer, AlMaha, AlSafa, Buhooth106 and Sara) were used and irrigated three times (2, 4, and 6 times), using the pivot sprinkler method. According to the result of this experiment, Buhooth106 variety had the highest yield (7.23 kg haˡ). Based on this result, Buhooth106 variety was selected for using as material in the second trial year.

In 2022, a second field experiment was conducted according to the split-plot design in randomized complete block (RCBD), using Buhooth106 variety. In this experiment treatment were the applying of four plant densities ((53333, 66666, 88888, and 133333 plants ha¹) and in three sprink irrigation times (2, 4, 6 days) and seeds were planted on Mart 20, 2022. The three sprink irrigation times in the main boards and application of plant densities in sub plots were placed.

According to result of this study, the plant densities (53333 and 66666 plants haˡ) were superior to in terms of leaf area (4801.67 and 4361.33 cm²), number of grains per ear (450.3 and 433.0 grains), weight of 300 grains (84.77, 79.20 g), and yield per plant (134.20 g), while the two plant densities of 133333 and 88888 plants haˡ were superior in plant height (186.64 and 181.09 cm) and plant yield per unit area , (9.29 and 8.19 t ha¹).

In considering plant density avarage, the 2 days interval pivot irrigation application resulted with the highest leaf area, the highest weight of 300 grains, and the highest yield per unit area, as 2 cm², 437 grains, 79.48 g and 9.21 t haˡ respectively, but, the 6-day irrigation treatment gave a yield of 6.64 t haˡ, this less yield can considered an accopmlished result only compared to the lack of irrigation.

The application of irrigation interval as 2 days provided the highest yield as 10.61 t haˡ, when a plant density arranged as 133333 plants haˡ. On the other side, the irrigation interval of 6 days gave 6.84 t haˡ in the plant density of 88888 plants haˡ ,that result was the best in limited irrigation interval. And, this treatments combination was characterized with the homogeneity of its seeds on the ear and the large size of the grain. In conclusion, it is possible to use little irrigation when only the appropriate plant density was chosen to give an acceptable yield from an economic point of view.
