Özet
Purpose This study aimed to assess the relationship between spiritual well-being and levels of surgical fear and anxiety in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. Design The research was conducted as a descriptive and correlational study using a cross-sectional design. Methods The study was completed with 220 participants. Data were collected using an Introductory Information Form, the Surgical Fear Questionnaire, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Short Version (STAI S-5, STAI T-5), and the Three-Factor Spiritual Well-Being Scale. The study data were collected using researcher-administered questionnaires during the preoperative period. Findings Participants had low levels of surgical fear and anxiety and high levels of spiritual well-being. Spiritual well-being was found to have a negative and weakly significant correlation with surgical fear and anxiety. Additionally, spiritual well-being was a significant predictor of surgical fear and anxiety. This result suggests that higher levels of spiritual well-being may be associated with lower levels of surgical fear and anxiety. Conclusions Spiritual well-being may play a protective role in reducing surgical fear and anxiety; therefore, interventions aimed at supporting patients’ spiritual well-being may contribute to better psychological preparation before surgery.
