Özet

Scabies is a parasitic infestation caused by Sarcoptes scabiei. The most common symptom is night itching. Scabies occurs worldwide and affects people of all races, age, gender, and social classes. Due to the fact that the disease is transmitted directly by close contact, early diagnosis is important for both prevention and control. This study was carried out from January 2004 - June 2011, during which 48 patients' samples were examined. The skin scrapings were examined in a drop of 10% potassium hydroxide under 100X magnification by the light microscope. Twenty-one (43.7%) skin scrapings of men and 27(56.3%) of female patients were investigated and 5 male and 3 female patients were found to be positive for S. scabiei. Although, there is a significant development in the socio-economic situation of the country, we believe that scabies is still an important health problem in Turkey and therefore a continuing public education, prevention and control of this infestation should be implemented.
