Erciyes Üniversitesi Gevher Nesibe Tıp Tarihi Enstitüsü, Erciyes Üniversitesi Rektörlüğü’ne bağlı bir enstitü olarak 1982 yılında kurulmuştur. Enstitünün kurucu müdürlüğüne Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hulusi Köker atanmıştır. Her ne kadar kuruluşundan bugüne değin çeşitli sebeplerle akademik altyapısı oluşturulamamış ve bu nedenle beklenen performansı sergileme şansı bulamamışsa da, Gevher Nesibe Tıp Tarihi Enstitüsü, tıp tarihi alanında halen Türkiye’nin tek enstitüsüdür.
Gevher Nesibe Tıp Tarihi Enstitüsü kuruluşundan beri birçok kitap ve makale yayımlamış, Türk-İslam hekimlerinin yanı sıra Selçuklu ve Osmanlı devri bilim ve kültürüne katkıda bulunmuş birçok bilim adamını tanıtmaya çalışmıştır. Bu yayınlardan dolayı, Enstitü 1990 yılında TÜBİTAK Bilim ve Hizmet Ödülü ile taltif edilmiştir. Ayrıca 1985 yılında Şerafeddin Sabuncuoğlu Kongresi'ni, 1991 yılında Selçuklular Devrinde Kültür ve Medeniyet Kongresi'ni, 1993 yılında İbn Rüşd Kongresi'ni ve Gevher Nesibe Darüşşifası’nın 800. kuruluş yıldönümü olan 2006 yılında ise 11. Türk Tıp Tarihi Kongresi'ni düzenlenmiştir. Erciyes Üniversitesi Gevher Nesibe Tıp Tarihi Enstitüsü’ne bağlı olarak 1982 yılında ziyarete açılan Gevher Nesibe Tıp Tarihi Müzesi, 2014 yılında Selçuklu Uygarlığı Müzesi'ne dönüştürülmüştür. Yakın gelecekte Enstitüsü bünyesinde tıp tarihi, eczacılık tarihi, veteriner hekimliği tarihi ve diş hekimliği tarihi alanlarında yüksek lisans ve doktora eğitiminin verilmesi planlanmaktadır.
The Gevher Nesibe Institute of the History of Medicine was founded in 1982 as an institute affiliated with the Erciyes University’s Rectorate. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hulusi Köker was appointed as its founding director. Even though the Institute could not firmly establish its academic structure due to many reasons and was not able to demonstrate the expected performance, it is currently the only Institute of the History of Medicine in Turkey.
Since its establishment, the Institute published several articles and books, strived to introduce Turkish-Muslim physicians as well as Ottoman and Seljuk scholars. Because of these publications, the Institute was awarded with the TÜBİTAK’s (Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Council) Science and Service Award in 1990. In addition, the Institute organized The Şerafeddin Sabuncuoğlu Congress (1985), The Congress on Culture and Civilization during the Seljuk Period (1991), The Ibn Rüşd Congress (1993), The 11th Turkish History of Medicine Congress to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the Gevher Nesibe Hospital and Medical School (2006). The Gevher Nesibe Museum for the History of Medicine which opened in 1982 affiliated with the Erciyes University Gevher Nesibe Institute of the History of Medicine, was converted into the Seljuk Civilization Museum in 2014. Graduate level education (MSc and PhD level) in history of medicine, history of pharmacy, history of veterinary medicine and history of dentistry is planned to be initiated in the near future.
