Pure humor, just like pure poetry, is the product of the superior human mind, namely akl-ı ma‘âd. Different from akl-ı ma‘âş, which controls the daily biological and physiological acts and needs of people, akl-ı ma‘âd is the mind that makes people search for the philosophy of things, discover their origin and self, think about the place they came from and will go to; and apart from these, it is the appellant mind that directs the people’s socio-cultural and artistic lives, and regulates their religious lives.

The rate of akl-ı ma‘âd to akl-ı ma‘âş is not at same level for every person; the people with more akl-ı ma‘âş are not able to correctly evaluate the philosophical behaviours and completely understand the sayings of those with more akl-ı ma‘âd. That is the reason why the intermediary texts, namely commentary texts, which reductively carry the meanings of these sayings that are the product of akl-ı ma‘âd to the level of akl-ı ma‘âş, were written.

In Turkish literature, various commentators commented on the philosophical poems and şathiyyes of especially the Sufi poets, and tried to reduce them to the level of those with akl-ı ma‘âş. Along with these Sufi texts, the comments written on Nasreddin Hodja’s latîfes serve this purpose.

This study aims that the comments written on şathiyye and latîfe texts, whose mazmûn in Turkish literature is philosophy, will be tried to be interpreted within the framework of the relationship among mind-philosophy-humor, and within the scope of the contemplation process of the mind and the objective to reach the truth.
