Abstract

The fact that the innovative approaches which are leading to the postmodern era have also heavily influenced the field of art have brought along the innovative approaches of the artists in the production phases. The orientation of the artists to issues such as gender, identity, hybridity, polysemy, consumption, which are accepted as the problems of the postmodern era, and putting creativity in the center while putting aside formal concerns, reveals the changing approaches to art. Within the process, on one hand, the artists have brought these problems up for discussion over their works, on the other hand, they put forward new approaches by way of the creative strategies they developed. In this research paper, the material thinking strategy which is one of the creative strategies is clarified within the context of innovation in art. The material thinking strategy has also adopted interdisciplinary strategy just as the metaphor, reflection, and shaping strategy has. It is observed that the artists who use the material thinking strategy within the context of interdisciplinarity, blur the boundaries between the art and the craft, and by this means turn it into a practice of the Art of Design. Accordingly, the material thinking strategy has been examined through the Art of Design, and it has been tried to be explained with concrete examples through the works of artists named Antrea Zittel, Joep Van Lieshout, and Jorge Pardo, that can be considered within the context of material thinking strategy.
