Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this research is to investigate students’ learning styles of the words and words meaning and keeping styles of the words in mind. The study sample consisted of 264 university students from Erciyes University and Mehmet Akif University, Turkey. Of the participants, 185 were female and 79 were male. For obtaining of the data, it was used questionnaire that contains the questions about how they learn words and their meanings and keep them in mind. The data were analyzed by SPSS 16.00 package program. This research reveals that the students who have education in foreign language department follow different techniques while learning vocabulary, there is not a statistical difference among the techniques the students follow while learning vocabulary, their departments and their gender, but the fact that 2 % of the students who use the dictionary because they wonder the meaning of a word are male and 19% of them are female reveals that there is a difference according to the gender. The fact that 66 students out of 86 students who choose reading to develop vocabulary knowledge are female and 20 of them are male can be interpreted as females numerically concentrate on reading more than males. When it is looked at the place of the total number of the students who choose reading in developing vocabulary knowledge, it is seen that less than 1/3 of the students choose this way. It has not been found any differences between the way that the students follow to keep a word in mind and their departments and genders. In the light of these results, the students who have education in foreign languages should be encouraged to read the texts which are suitable for their levels and about the area they are interested in; and learning atmospheres where they can use the words they have learned should be organized. In the classroom atmosphere some sample applications related to the several memory techniques should be accomplished.
