Abstract

In the presented pilot-study, the urine iodine content of children up to seven years of age living in Kayseri-Turkey was determined by iodine-starch spectrophotometric method after alkaline ashing procedure. The levels of iodine in the children were found in the range of 15.0 - 148.2 mug/l. The mean level(43.5 mug/l) of the urinary iodine of the children is lower than the values given by World Health Organization. No significant difference was observed between the urinary iodine concentrations of boys and girls. Their mean urinary iodine excretion was adequate and much lower than those of children from many countries.
