Özet
ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of smoking on the amount of substance P in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and serum. Material and Methods: Thirty-nine healthy subjects, 19 smokers and 20 non-smokers without any periodontal disease, participated in the study. Clinical indices, including plaque index (PI), probing pocket depth (PPD) and bleeding on probing (BOP), were assessed. Plasma and gingival crevicular fluid samples were collected and quantified for Substance-P using a Radio Immuno Assay. Results were expressed as pg/30 seconds sample, the absolute amount of SP in the GCF samples. Results: GCF substance P concentrations were similar in both smokers and non-smokers. Although, mean level of GCF SP levels was lower in smokers (55.85 ± 10.59 pg/30 s) compared to non-smokers (96.14 ± 27.64 pg/30 s), the difference was not statistically significant. Concentration of peripheral SP levels of smokers was 235.65 ± 12.32 pg/mL and 226.75 ± 8.78 pg/mL of non-smokers, that was statistically not significant. Conclusion: Our results suggest that smoking does not affect the GCF and peripheral levels of substance P in the sistemically healthy subjects with gingivitis.
