Özet

Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is cultivated for fiber, seed, and oil, but its productivity is strongly constrained by weed pressure. This study, conducted in 2022–2023 at the Erciyes University Agricultural Research and Application Center in Kayseri, Turkey, aimed to determine an effective weed control strategy for this crop. The study to evaluate the weed control efficacy, phytotoxicity and crop safety of pre-plant, pre-emergence, and post-emergence herbicides in industrial hemp. According to the results, five broad-leaved weed species; Amaranthus retroflexus L., Chenopodium album L., Lactuca serriola L., Portulaca oleracea L., Tribulus terrestris L., and one narrow-leaved weed species, Cynodon dactylon L., were the most prevalent in the experimental field. In pre-emergence and pre-planting applications, the greatest reduction in total weed dry weight at 56 days after treatment compared to the weedy control was achieved with pyroxasulfone, reaching 83.69% in 2022 and 80.47% in 2023. In post-emergence applications, the highest control was obtained with hand hoeing, with reductions of 63.95% (2022) and 63.00% (2023). The highest phytotoxicity was observed with bentazone (78.03%), indicating this active ingredient is unsuitable for industrial hemp. Overall, the results highlight the importance of integrated chemical and mechanical weed control with early-season interventions. Pyroxasulfone showed consistently strong pre-emergence weed suppression in industrial hemp under semi-arid Central Anatolia conditions of Türkiye. In contrast, bentazone caused severe phytotoxicity, indicating limited post-emergence herbicide options. These findings provide new insights for developing sustainable weed management strategies in hemp production.
