An effective battery thermal management system (BTMS) is essential for a safe and joyful driving experience in electrical/hybrid automobiles. This work presents an investigation and a verification of the experimental results of BTMS used with wavy mini-channel (WMC) by comparing with those of an innovative numerical methodology which is adopted. Different flow rates in the WMC (1.0 L/min-2.0 L/min) and battery discharge rates (1C-5C) were considered. With the innovative methodology, thermal, hydraulic and electrical analysis of the BTMS could be simulated under realistic conditions. A good agreement between the experimental and the numerical data was achieved by the proposed methodology. Pressure drop through the WMC was considerably influenced by the flow rate, while it had no significant effect on cooling the cells. The results indicate that the use of the WMC significantly reduces the battery temperature to a safety range even at a high discharge rate of 5C.
