Use of Biostimulants in Crop Production

Özet

As global food demand continues to increase, challenges- climate change, soil degradation, and limited water sources- are becoming more severe. Due to all these problems, finding sustainable alternatives to conventional agricultural inputs is now very important. At this point, plant biostimulants get more attention because they help plant to grow better, improve the use of nutrients, and also increase tolerance to abiotic stress, so the environmental load of agricultural production is reduced. According to the EU Regulation No. 2019/1009, plant biostimulants are substances or microorganisms that help plants in different ways. They work through natural bioactive compounds such as protein hydrolysates and beneficial microbes. These materials improve nutrient use and stress tolerance, but they do not directly supply nutrients. Plant growth and yield increase, and the use of synthetic fertilizers become lower, with both economic and environmental benefit. This review critically evaluates the recent advances in the field of plant biostimulants, with a special focus on their classification, sources, and modes of action. The main categories discussed includes protein hydrolysates, humic and fulvic substances, seaweed extracts, and plant growth–promoting rhizobacteria. These products affect plants at physiological, biochemical, and molecular level. They help to balance hormones, support antioxidant systems, improve root growth, and also Schange how nutrients move inside the plant. In addition, current challenges in the use of biostimulants and future research needs are briefly discussed for their role in sustainable agriculture.
