Molecular diversity and several nut characteristics including nut weight, length, width, kernel percentage in Kayseri hazelnuts were investigated. The allelic data of the Kayseri hazelnuts were produced by 11 simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci and combined with previously published alleles of hazelnuts of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Italy, Spain, and Turkey. Fourteen reference genotypes were included in fragment analysis of Kayseri hazelnuts to accomplish allele combining accurately. Leaves for DNA isolation were collected from 33 randomly selected samples and the nuts for morphological characterization were collected from 19 of the 33 local accessions in 2016. Fresh nut weight ranged from 2.39-4.61 g. Fresh kernel weight was between 1.1-2.40 g. The nut length ranged from 1.7-2.3 cm and the width from 1.5-2.2 cm. Observed husks length averaged 3,5 cm. High genetic diversity (He=0.62, Ho=0.51, and PIC=0.59) was observed in the Kayseri accessions. A neighbor joining (NJ) cluster analyses distinguished the Kayseri accessions from the remaining accessions depicting the genetic uniqueness of Kayseri hazelnuts. Considering together molecular assay nut characteristics, Kayseri hazelnuts are a distinct group and a valuable source for further breeding and production experiments.
