Bu çalışmada; Tolstoy ve Gandhi arasındaki etkileşimin arka planda kalmış detaylarının ortaya konması amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, ilk olarak Thoreau, Gandhi ve Tolstoy’un sivil itaatsizlik hakkındaki görüşlerinden vicdan olgusu çerçevesinde bahsedilmiştir. Ardından literatürde işaret edilen Gandhi’nin etkilendiği Tolstoy eserlerinin haricindeki etkileşimlerinin ortaya koyması hedeflenmiştir. Bu nedenle, Tolstoyculuk, satyagraha ve Tolstoy Çiftliği gibi iki ismin etkileşim içerisinde olabileceği düşünülen alanlar mektuplaşmaları, gazete yazıları ve Gandhi’nin yaptığı Tolstoy’un doğumunun yüzüncü yıl konuşması temel alınarak incelenmiştir. Yapılan bu incelemeler sonucunda ise; her iki ismin ortak noktası olarak şiddetsizlik olduğu ve buna bağlı olarak da sevgi ve yardımlaşmanın ön plana çıktığı görülmüştür. Aralarındaki en temel fark ise Gandhi’de dini öğretilere bağlılık ve onun getirdikleri ön plandayken Tolstoy dine ve onun gizemine karşı çıkması olmuştur. Böylece Tolstoy ve Gandhi etkileşiminin literatürde bahsedildiği kadar sadece dini temelli olmadığı, pek çok alanda etkileşim içerisinde oldukları sonucuna varılmıştır.
This study aims to reveal the background details of the interaction between Tolstoy and Gandhi. For this purpose, firstly, Thoreau, Gandhi, and Tolstoy's views on civil disobedience are mentioned within the framework of the phenomenon of conscience. Then, it is aimed to reveal the interactions other than Tolstoy's works that Gandhi was influenced by, which are pointed out in the literature. For this reason, areas such as Tolstoyism, satyagraha, and Tolstoy Farm, which are thought to be in interaction between the two figures, were analyzed on the basis of their correspondence, newspaper articles, and Gandhi's speech on the centenary of Tolstoy's birth. As a result of these examinations, it was seen that the common point of both names was non-violence and accordingly, love and cooperation. The main difference between them is that while Gandhi's adherence to religious teachings and what they brought are emphasized, Tolstoy opposed religion and its mystery. Thus, it was concluded that the interaction between Tolstoy and Gandhi was not only religious-based as mentioned in the literature but that they interacted in many areas.
