Özet
This chapter examines Paying the Land by Joe Sacco as an environmentally oriented postcolonial text that documents the painful history and struggles of the Dene people in Canada. Through a unique blend of documentary reportage and graphic storytelling, Sacco reflects the Dene’s indigenous culture, their traditional ways of life, the profound disruption caused by colonialism, and the resulting cultural, socio-economic, psychological, and environmental damage inflicted on the Dene community. The chapter highlights Sacco’s representation of personalised historical memories and lived experiences, emphasising how colonial violence, oppression, and exploitation led to social fragmentation, moral decay, and ecological degradation. Analysed through the lens of postcolonial ecocriticism, his work critiques dominant ideologies such as capitalism, imperialism, and globalism and advocates for locally rooted environmental stewardship, sustainable green economic development, and environmentally conscious growth. The chapter also argues that Sacco’s narrative not only underscores the intrinsic interconnectedness of environmental and postcolonial issues but also offers a path towards healing, justice, and cultural resilience through the restoration of indigenous wisdom and life practices.
