Özet
Skeletal fragility is a large and growing public health issue. One in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 will suffer a fracture in their remaining lifetime. Moreover, several conditions, including obesity, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis, are associated with increased fracture risk. Thus gaining a deeper insight into the factors affecting bone strength and fracture susceptibility could enhance the identification of individuals at the greatest risk of fractures. In this chapter, we outline the primary factors influencing bone strength, with a specific focus on age-related transformations and the impact of bone morphology, microarchitecture, and composition on both bone strength and fracture risk.
