Abstract

Abstract This study, from the sociological, psychological and physiological point of view, tried to explore the speech defects and the lack of oral expression competence of the students attending the Department of Turkish Language Teaching, which were observed in Oral Expression and Speech Education classes. Research data was collected through reports and observations on oral expression skills from in-class activities performed in oral expression classes and students with speech defects were also interviewed and requested to hand in their CVs. The most significant speech inabilities observed among students were the lack of self-confidence and knowledge and the mental disorganization. It was also found that physical shortcomings and students’ lack of language competence were the reasons for feeling inhibited about expressing themselves orally.
