Abstract

Introduction: Breast milk banking; Ethical problems in our country, traditional beliefs and attitudes, parents' concerns about the security of donor milk and lack of information is a matter of controversial issues. The aim of this study is determining the opinions of health personnel about breast milk banking.

Method: The study was conducted on 400 women health personnel (doctors, nurses, dieticians, dentists, pharmacists, etc.) who work in various health institutions in Ankara and agreed to participate in the research. After the literature review on the subject, the questionnaires prepared by the researchers were applied to the health personnel by using faceto- face interview technique. Obtained data were evaluated by using IBM SPSS 25.0 statistical package program.

Results: 69,0% of the 400 health personnel participating in the study had children. Health personnel who had children (n=276) gave breast milk for 0-6 months alone, for more than 6 months alone or did not give breast milk alone (75,0%, 21,7%, 3,3%, respectively). 99,0% of the health personnel in the study stated that the most ideal food for the baby is breast milk. 50,8% of health personnel (n=203) has information about breast milk banking. The personnel who have knowledge about breast milk banking have acquired the information from other health personnel, society, social media and other sources (42,9%, 34,5%, 14,8%, 7,8%, respectively). 51,7% of the health personnel ensure that breast milk banking is reliable, 25,1% of the health personnel think that they are not reliable and 23,2% of the health personnel also think that they are reliable. 41,3% of the health personnel participating in the study wanted breast milk banking in our country and 40,8% of the health personnel state that if breast milk banks are established, they want to benefit from this practice in a troubled situation, 50,0% of the health personnel stated that they would donate their milk if a breast milk bank was established. As the level of education increased, the number of those who wanted to benefit from the bank increased (p <0,05).

Conclusion: Breast milk banking should be considered as an alternative in order to benefit from a very useful food such as breast milk and reduce the use of formula, it is necessary to clarify the questions such as the society is not informed about the religion in the minds of the people, that the rested breast milk will not be useful and cannot be kept under sterile conditions.
