Abstract: The sound value of the symbol  , which appears in the 8th line (T I G 1) of the Tonyukuk Inscription, has been debated for a long time, and efforts have been made to determine which sound or sounds correspond to this symbol. Since researchers have not been able to finalize discussion concerning the sound value of this symbol, the word as well as the sentence in which this symbol is found have been read and interpreted in a variety of ways. Scholars have usually preferred to attribute the sound value aş to this problematic symbol and to equate it with a similar symbol found in the Hemçik-Çırgakı (E41) Inscription. However, the g2 sound, which appears beside the symbol  and represents a front vowel, has been either overlooked or treated as a spelling error. This article aims to attribute a new sound value to the symbol  and therefore to re-read and re-interpret the word containing this symbol. It also attempts to demonstrate that the word has not been misspelled in any way. The first part of the article provides an overview of previous studies on this issue. The second part, where the author puts forward his own argument, is divided into three sections: 1) attributing *lb double consonant sound value to the symbol , 2) analyzing the word uçuk, 3) analyzing the word *elbeg.
