Özet

This study focuses on the development of epoxy-based composites reinforced with horsehair-woven fabrics. The weft-directional tensile and flexural properties of the composites were investigated. The woven fabric samples were diversified by varying the number of hairs in the weft and warp bundle, weft density, and weave type (plain and twill). All fabric samples except the reference were subjected to NaClO pre-treatment to improve interfacial bonding. The pre-treatment effectively removed surface impurities and improved the smoothness of the hair surface. The tensile strength was positively affected by the alkali treatment, whereas the flexural strength was adversely affected. The tensile and flexural properties were enhanced by doubling the hairs in the weft bundle. Tensile strength decreased in the weft direction as the number of hairs in the warp bundle increased. The twill weave reinforced composite demonstrated superior mechanical properties among all the tested samples, exhibiting the highest tensile strength (57.58 ± 4.4 MPa), tensile strain (7.10 ± 0.8%), and elastic modulus (2.00 ± 0.2 GPa), as well as the highest flexural strength (67.34 ± 1.3 MPa) and flexural modulus (2.8 ± 0.1 GPa).
