Abstract

This study investigated the effects on fuels physical and chemical properties such as kinematic viscosity, density, flash point, cloud point, pour point and cold filter plugging point of different fuel proportions of ternary blends of biodiesel-butanol-diesel fuel. .

Low cost biodiesel could be produced from waste cooking oil. It is a promising feedstock for biodiesel production. This work produced biodiesel from waste cooking oil in order to determine some of the basic thermo-physical properties fuel blends to compare with neat diesel. In the first step of production, acid value of crude oil is evaluated, which defines the precedence of esterification and transesterification method. Then, product of biodiesel and glycerin obtained from waste cooking oil that depends on the type of acid or alkaline catalyst process. Biodiesel was separated from crude glycerin so that washing, drying and filtration process. Butanol has good calorific value and mixing capacity with other fuels like gasoline, biodiesel and petro-diesel that makes it one of the promising alternative fuel. Furthermore, butanol improves cold flow properties of fuel blends and regulated of exhausted gas emission, butanol has high latent heat of vaporization which reduces of inner cylinder temperature and decreases NOx emissions. Oxygen contenting alternative fuels such as biodiesel and butanol blends could improve combustion and gas emissions in the diesel engine. Therefore, D75B20But5, D70B20But10 and D60B20But20 proportion in volume basis fuel blends have been evaluated to improve of cold flow and thermo-physical properties.
