Turkey’s transition into commercial television broadcasting occurred after a complicated and problematic period. While the private television channels were trying to learn broadcasting between 1990 and 1994, the audience placed the new broadcasting understanding in an important point of their lives without making sense of it. After this painful period, especially starting from 1995 on, the broadcasters started to become professionals contextually and technically while the viewers experienced the context of broadcastings to a large extend. Both structures, in a mutual relation, affected each other substantially. As a consequence of this effect, television broadcasters both tried various formats from all over the world and included the successful ones in their broadcast streaming by localisation. From the points of views of “which programme type did the viewers in Turkey watch during this period” and “what are the viewers’ variable tendencies in these years”, it is aimed in this study to put forth what kind of programs come to the forefront in ratings. Within this framework, by examining the ratings of four private television companies and one public television channel according to their genres, which formats the audience in Turkey chose to watch were identified and a general situation was presented for the change appeared over the years. Within seven different periods between 1995 and 2010, the ratings of TRT 1, Kanal D, Star TV, Show TV and ATV broadcastings were identified and towards which formats the audience headed in this historical process were suggested. Moreover, for the broadcasters, it was also examined whether the increase in the ratings according to programme types caused an increase in the broadcasting of that type in the next year or not.
