Teaching English for Academic Purposes: Theory into Practice, Ece Zehir Topkaya,Handan Çelik, Editör, Palgrave Macmillan, London , Bern, ss.249-272, 2024
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is an academic discipline needed by any individual to survive in a competitive academic environment. In this discipline, integrating corpus and corpus analysis into instruction is a promising approach for EAP to provide students with authentic academic language experiences to improve their academic language skills. This chapter discusses the integration of corpus and corpus analysis into EAP to explore its influence on vocabulary teaching, academic writing, and language awareness. In this context, corpus analysis helps students analyze authentic academic language, while corpus-based instruction allows instructors to base their teaching practices on empirical evidence rather than intuitive predictions about academic language use. We explore the benefits of exposing learners to authentic language use, including the teaching of collocations and formulaic language through corpus data. We also provide practical examples to showcase the use of corpus and corpus analysis where students actively engage with academic language. We also offer suggestions to EAP instructors for using corpus and corpus analysis in their teaching practices to enhance their students’ academic language use proficiency.
