Özet

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on the levels of the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) MMP-9, among both patients with periodontal disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) and periodontal healthy individuals who have a vitamin D deficiency.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study is a follow-up to the research project that evaluated the relationship between serum vitamin D concentration and MMP-9 levels in gingival crevicular fluid in periodontal diseases.

In this particular study, the impact of vitamin D supplementation was assessed by analyzing the levels of MMP- 9 in the gingival crevicular fluid collected from the same dental sites of patients with vitamin D deficiency

who received appropriate medical treatment and had been using vitamin D supplements for one month. The levels of MMP-9 were compared between the baseline of the study and after vitamin D supplementation.

A total of 101 participants were included in this study, consisting of 34 with periodontitis, 34 with gingivitis, and 33 periodontally healthy individuals. The participants’ periodontal status was evaluated radiographically

and clinically by measuring probing depth, clinical attachment loss, gingival index, plaque index, and radiographic analysis. The levels of MMP-9 in the gingival crevicular fluid were analyzed using the enzymelinked

immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method.”

RESULTS: The results of our study suggest that the risk of periodontal disease may be elevated due to vitamin D deficiency, which could be attributed to the effect on MMP9 expression.

CONCLUSIONS: This study will provide a better understanding of the role of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of periodontitis and could lead to the development of new therapeutic approaches for the management of this

chronic inflammatory periodontal diseases.
