Low
carbon ferrochromium is considered one of the ferroalloys necessary for the
production of some high-quality steel grades specially the corrosion- resistant
and high-temperature oxidation-resistant steels. The aluminothermic production
of metals and alloys has been widely studied. However, its application for
production of low carbon ferrochromium has not been given the due attention of
researchers in developing countries despite its technical simplicity and the
low capital investment it requires. In this research, the production of low
carbon ferrochromium from Turkish chromite ores which contains 56.7 wt.% Cr2O3
and 15.7 wt.% Fe2O3 was investigated via aluminothermic
method. In that process, powder aluminum and NaNO3 are used as a
reducing agent and energizer, respectively.
Effect on the ferrochrome production yield on the amounts of aluminum
and energizer in the reaction mixture was investigated. Optimum aluminum and
energizer content in the reaction was determined. The chemical analysis and
carbon content of the reaction products was analyzed via X-ray fluorescence
spectrometer (XRF, Malvern Panalytical) and combustion analyzer (LECO),
respectively. The highest chromium recovery was 73% and achieved with using 59
wt. % chromite ore, 13 wt.% NaNO3 and 25 wt.% Al powders.
