Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable production systems within the framework of combating global climate change have become central priorities of international public policies. In this context, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has been established as part of the European Union Green Deal. This regulation has affected global trade through the principles it introduces. Türkiye is one of the countries whose commercial life is affected by it. This study aims to investigate whether including companies operating in sectors initially covered by the EU CBAM in Türkiye in the BIST Sustainability Index affects their financial performance. For this purpose, quarterly data for 21 companies operating in CBAM sectors and included in the BIST Sustainability Index from 2014 to 2024 were tested using the panel data analysis method. In the analyses in the study, the sustainability variable was used as a dummy variable (taking a value of 1 in the quarter when the company entered the sustainability index and 0 in the quarter when it did not enter). According to the study findings, inclusion in the sustainability index has no statistically significant effect on the financial performance (ROA, ROE, PB/V) of companies in the sectors covered by CBAM. In contrast, among the fundamental financial indicators, the leverage ratio had a strong negative effect on profitability, while the current ratio had a positive and statistically significant effect. The findings indicate that in emerging markets such as Türkiye, investors focus on companies’ traditional debt-paying capacity and liquidity strengths rather than environmental ratios.
