Herein, we have rationally utilized 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA) as a hydrophilic ligand for phase transfer of gold (Au) NPs from non-hydrolytic system into aqueous solutions and as a targeting ligand for recognition of model pathogen. In principle, while free thiol end of 4-MPBA conjugates to surface of hydrophobic Au NPs to form stable Au NP in aqueous solutions, diol groups can bind to glycan on the membrane of pathogens through cis-diol configuration. Finally, this ligand can be applied to other hydrophobic metallic and metel oxide NPs for phase transfer and molecular recognition. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
