The lead, copper, nickel, cobalt and cadmium contents of water samples from Karasu, Sarmisakli Cayi and Kizilirmak Rivers that contain industrial and house-hold sewage of the Kayseri City-Turkey were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry after preconcentration and separation on an Amberlite XAD-4 column. To compare the levels of the metal contents in water and sediment samples, trace metal concentrations of sediment samples from the same stations were also determined after leaching with aqua regia. The metal concentrations found in this study for the water and sediment samples were approximately three times higher than results found in 1990.
