Objective: To investigate alterations in middle ear mechanics after type 1 cartilage tympanoplasty by comparing the ambient pressure absorbance (APAR) values of the perforated tympanic membrane (TM), normal TM, and cartilage-grafted TM. Methods: Twenty patients diagnosed with non-suppurative chronic otitis media and 20 healthy controls (CG) were included. Pure tone audiometry and wideband tympanometry (WBT) were performed once in the CG and preoperatively and one month and three months postoperatively in the patients. Results: Using WBT, the patients three-month postoperative APAR values were found to be similar to those of the CG at low frequencies, while lower APAR values were recorded at middle and high frequencies. Air-bone gap and APAR values showed significant negative correlations at 1000 and 4000 Hz both pre- and postoperatively. Conclusion: Generally, the patients APAR values were significantly lower at middle and high frequencies than those of the CG. Postoperative WBT is a practical tool for investigating the effects of a repaired TM on middle ear dynamics.
