Özet

Due to increasing population and urbanization rates, it is predicted that by 2050, one-third of the world’s population will live in cities (World Bank, 2024). This rapid population growth has deepened the need for housing. However, in many cities, an increasing number of people face challenges in housing affordability and access to affordable housing. Current research reveals a global housing crisis due to insufficient housing supply despite increasing demand in large cities (Jenkins, 2022; Wetzstein, 2022; White and Nandedkar, 2019). Access to housing has become a financial commodity and is an urgent issue for all cities worldwide. Turkey has tried to solve the housing problem with official programs in various processes since 1923. However, in today’s world, where the unstable situation experienced due to Turkey’s current economic conditions is reflected in the housing supply and therefore in the accessibility of housing, a special set of tools are needed for accessibility of housing. In this research, based on the housing problem experienced, an important step and a self-help social housing presentation format are being investigated in the context of “assistance to those who build their own homes,” which was established in 1996, to provide housing to low-income individuals despite limited public resources. The Eskişehir Bağları Squatter Prevention Zone example will be examined as the study area.
