Abstract

The necessity to restrict the use of living things in scientific experiments leads to the development and use of cell cultures in many different areas of biomedical studies. In this review, it is aimed to give information about cell culture which is preferred in many fields and materials required for culture and basic principles of cell culture.

Cell culture, one of the main methods used in cellular and molecular biology, is an in vivo model system to observe the normal physiology and biochemistry of cells, also observe the mutagenic and carcinogenic effects of drugs and toxic compounds on cells. To create these model systems laboratory materials, cell line selection and basic principles, passaging, physical conditions of cells, cell-appropriate media, the proliferation of cells, separation of cells from the surface, cell counting and stocking of the cell lines methods need to be known.

Nowadays, various experimental animals are used in studies to create treatment options in human and animal health. Replacement which is the third R of the 3R rule (Reduction, Refinement, Replacement) means using other materials instead of laboratory animals if it is possible and it leads us to use cell culture methods. Therefore; cell culture studies can be controlled, reproducible and economical, as well as leading scientific studies.

Keywords: Cell line, cell culture, replacement.
