Pragmatics and Language Teaching, Şeyda Selen Çimen,Betül Bal-Gezegin, Editör, Pegem, Ankara, ss.249-273, 2021
This chapter basically deals with the aspects of L2
pragmatics we could assess and how we could do it. In order to discuss the L2
pragmatics assessment, we first zoom in on pragmatics as part of semiotic
trichotomy and emphasize its relation with syntax and semantics to a greater
extent. Following this, we mainly focus on aspects of pragmatics that teachers
could assess since it could be hard to attempt to assess every component of pragmatics,
which has a relatively wide scope in foreign language teaching contexts and
differs from other skills or aspects of language. To do this, two consecutive sections
compare and contrast a range of issues with respect to the (a) traditional and
(b) technology-oriented means of assessing L2 pragmatics. Following the
concluding remarks with regards to the assessment of L2 pragmatics, we present
a sample lesson plan about teaching the speech act of ‘agreeing-disagreeing’ at
the end of the chapter. With the help of this sample plan, we believe that we
provide the readers of this chapter with an example about how to integrate a
pragmatics-related component into their classroom as well as potential
materials and activities while teaching it.
