Background: Nursing students who will take part in health services in the future are expected to perform innovative behaviors. In this sense, it is essential to comprehend the variables predicting innovative behaviors of nursing students. Aim: This study aims to determine the mediating role of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in the relationship between professional self-concept and innovative behavior in nursing students. Methods: The data for this cross-sectional study were collected from 326 nursing students with clinical experience during the 2022-2023 academic year. The data were gathered online using self-report scales. Data analysis was conducted using Pearson correlation analysis and Structural Equation Modeling. Results: Professional self-concept directly predicts innovative behavior in nursing students. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation mediate the relationship between professional self-concept and innovative behavior. Conclusion: Professional self-concept is recognized as a crucial factor in fostering innovative behaviors among nursing students. Therefore, it is essential to support students’ professional self-concept as well as their intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
