Having a substantial part of our daily lives, television maintains its place and importance among other means of communication. Hosting a total of 246 terrestrial channels with 25 national, 16 regional and 205 local ones, television broadcasting in Turkey was launched in 1968 and maintained under the hegemony of TRT until 1990. Since then, this hegemony was demolished as private channels were established one by one thus forming a mixed television broadcasting market. This can be described as the most important milestone in the history of television broadcasting in Turkey given the content of television programmes was substantially changed. The emergence of theme-channels and digital platforms within the historical process were also important breaking points in terms of television broadcasting. In this sense, the study aims to reveal the course of television broadcasting in Turkey for the last 20 years providing answers to some questions like what kinds of programmes are viewed, what kind of programmes are fore grounded and creating a detailed picture of the changes in the broadcasting approach of television channels. In this study, the television broadcasts of TRT 1, Kanal D, Star TV, Show TV and ATV in 9 different periods between 1995-2015 will be compared with each other according to the types of programmes they broadcast more, along with evaluations on the reasons for the changes observed in different periods. In conclusion, a comprehensive chart of broadcasting will be formed regarding the broadcasting in Turkey.
