Innovative Approach in Weight Management:
Comparison of Food Replicas and Augmented Reality-Based Mobile Application on
Body Composition
Introduction:
Traditionally,
catalogs and physical food replicas (FR) are used to enhance portion awareness
in weight management. This study aims to conduct the first comparative analysis
of the effects of an Augmented Reality (AR)-based mobile application, developed
as an innovative alternative to traditional methods, on body composition.
Methods:
The study was conducted with 40 healthy women aged
19-30 with a BMI of 25-30 kg/m². Participants were randomized into AR and FR
groups; both received individualized low-calorie diets and portion training for
four weeks. The FR group was trained using physical replicas, while the AR
group used the “AUGMENT 3D” application. Body weight (BW), waist/hip
circumference, and body fat percentage were measured pre- and
post-intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0.
Results: Mean ages were similar (AR:21.85±2.28, FR:22.00±2.38 years). Anthropometric
parameters decreased in both groups post-intervention. BW decreased from
73.19±9.01 kg to 71.69±9.68 kg (FR), from 75.60±9.82 kg to 73.90±9.07 kg (AR). Waist circumference decreased from 87.86±5.23
cm to 85.24±6.08 cm (FR), 85.95±7.68 cm to 83.51±9.57 cm (AR); hip from
109.28±6.36 cm to 107.95±6.01 cm (FR), 106.80±6.15 cm to 105.60±6.08 cm (AR). Body
fat percentage dropped from 34.02±3.28% to 33.28±3.38% (FR), 34.71±3.85% to
33.37±4.72% (AR). Changes between groups were statistically similar (p>0.05).
Conclusion
This
study demonstrates that traditional and digital portion training yield similar
short-term efficacy on body composition. The findings suggest that AR-based
tools can be introduced into the literature as innovative, portable, and
effective alternatives in weight management. Further large-scale studies are
recommended to evaluate long-term effects.
