ABSTRACT
This study aims
to determine the central meaning of the auxiliary verb “-iru”, whether it keeps
this meaning within the structure of the “verb- te-iru” or not and therefore,
the relationship of its meaning in the context of “existence” and “continuity”.
Considering this as our starting point, this study examines “verb-te-iru”
interms of meaning and structure and it is put forth that the “verb te iru”
does the functions as a conjuction between two verbs. After that, the meaning
of “iru” at the structure of “verb te iru” is exposed. It is justified that the
structure “-te iru” (which is examined in time-aspect research and basically
has a progressive meaning) expresses conditional meaning because of “-iru”. It
is assumed that “iru” gives a conditional meaning to the verb that comes before
it. Therefore, it is concluded that continuity has a narrower meaning than
condition. As a result of this assumption, appearences of “iru” in Turkish
according to speech time and conditions are explained
Also
in this study the difference between the basic meaning and the perfect meaning
of “-iru” differentianting according to context is caused in terms of time. And
in terms of meaning as both of them expresses condition this can be considered
as similarity between them.
