Numerical Investigation of Heat Transfer Augmentation of a Tube with Airfoil Cross Sectional Coiled Wire Inserts

The present study represents the heat transfer enhancement in a tube with airfoil cross sectional helically coiled wire inserts. A uniform heat flux was subjected to the bottom surface of the channel and k-w model was applied to investigate parameters of five Reynolds number (4000<Re<14000) and three different pitch ratios (P.R=3D, 4D and 5D). The numerical solution procedure includes the investigation of heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics with using finite volume method with standard k-w turbulence model to solve the continuity, momentum, energy and turbulence equations in three dimensional domain. The results indicated that the heat transfer enhancement increased with decreasing pitch ratio. The use of coiled wire inserts leads to increase in heat transfer and pressure drop over the smooth tube. The thermal performance of the system with increasing Reynolds number. In conclusion, to enhance heat transfer helically coiled wire can be widely applied wherever heat exchangers with tubes are used.
