In the literature of philosophy of religion, two classical problems are attached to the discussion of divine attributes: the problem of human freedom in the face of divine omniscience and omnipotence, and the problem of evil in the face of divine goodness and omnipotence. This paper argues that the privileged position these two problems occupy in the curriculum cannot be explained by their logical weight alone, and that they bear a structural parallelism to the two fundamental orientations represented by the concupiscible (shahwa) and irascible (ghadab) faculties in the classical psychology of the soul. The concupiscible faculty is oriented toward pleasure and the beneficial, and this orientation by its nature recognizes no limit. The irascible faculty is oriented toward repelling harm, resisting threat and protecting the self. Accordingly, the demand of the concupiscible faculty (“let no limit be set to my desire”) plays a decisive role in the existential constitution of the freedom objection, and the demand of the irascible faculty (“let no harm befall me”) in that of the evil objection. The relation proposed is not an identity but a structural parallelism. In order to distinguish the logical validity of the problems from the existential orientations that carry them, the paper proposes three modes, namely the logical-conceptual problem, the evidential problem and existential protest, and confines its analysis to the third mode alone. The analysis is symmetrical. It acknowledges that theistic belief may likewise draw on similar structures of desire and, by reversing the direction of the Feuerbachian and Freudian projection scheme, opens to discussion the possibility that objections to God are also bound up with determinate structures of desire.
