In this study, postharvest diseases of watermelon were detected on grafted and ungrafted Crimson Sweet fruits stored at 7°C (optimum temperature for storage of watermelons) for 7 days, 14 days, and 21 days and then moved to 21°C for 7 days. There was no disease observed on fruits pre-stored at 7°C for 7 days. However, the increase in the storage time of fruits resulted in the surface decays caused by different fungi. Botrytis cinerea, Alternaria cucumerina, Cladosporium cucumerinum and Fusarium spp., Penicillium digitatum and P. italicum were the most encountered fungi identified followed by Colletotrichum orbiculare and Stemphylium sp. causing fruits of watermelons. Fruits pre-stored at 7°C for 21 days exhibited maximum amount and severity of decays caused by those fungi. Grafted and ungrafted watermelon fruits did not show differential susceptibility to those pathogens. Symptoms caused by each fungal species were described and illustrated separately. Out of all pathogens identified, B. cinerea, C. cucumerinum and Stemphylium sp. were first time described as additional pathogens to other previously known species causing postharvest diseases of watermelon. Since different vegetables have their own group of characteristic pathogens for which they serve as suitable hosts, the results of this study illuminating the presence of diverse pathogens on watermelons is of great importance for postharvest preservation and pathology of watermelons.
