Today, popular music has come to be known as
an integral part of mass culture together with
other products of popular culture. It’s also
asserted that such characteristics of mass
culture which can be listed as “standardization,
simplification, presenting the same item in
different labels, association, imitation”, as also
defined previously by Adorno, are encountered
in popular music. One of the signs of
standardization in music, repetition is constantly
applied in production and presentation and
consumption stages. All musical productions
imitate each other in accordance with
standardized market conditions. The value of
most musical items is determined according to the extent of standardization to which they are
exposed under market conditions. The listeners
who are accustomed to musical products
prepared according to the same standard plan
can easily guess what’s to come next in a song,
as they usually do when watching TV serials.
Other products imitate popular TV programs,
films, serials and musics in order to become
popular as well. This study analyses the
characteristics of popular music in Turkish
Popular Music as defined by Adorno in his
article named “On Pop Music”. The study firstly
introduces characteristics of popular music
analysing Adorno’s article “On Pop Music” and
then performs a content analysis on 5 hit songs
selected from the music program named
“Zirvedekiler”, weekly broadcast on Kral TV
(broadcasts throughout Turkey), between
02.07.2007 and 05.08.2007.
