In a move to grow the share of alternative fuels in the country’s energy mix, increase security of energy supply and mitigate harmful emissions, the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has developed Turkey’s first National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP) in line with the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive that targets 30% of total energy supply to be obtained from renewables by 2023. To achieve this goal, research is needed to assess the potential of biofuels. Consequently, waste can play a key role in this regard not only to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate the emissions but also to help assist proper waste management disposal system in the country. Wastes are much available and their recycling potential can be of great interest to the policy maker.
This proposal aims to produce biofuels (biodiesel and biogas) from waste resources in Turkey such as waste cooking oil (WCO), spent coffee grounds (SCG), spent tea waste (STW), food waste (FW), sewage sludge (SW) beside macroalgae. Furthermore, glycerin which is a by-product of biodiesel reaction will be co-digested with other wastes to enhance the yield of CH4 through anaerobic fermentation process. Thus, two types of biofuels can be produced. Secondly, the project aims to experimentally measure thermo-physical properties of ternary blends of diesel, biodiesel and alcohols using our existing facilities. The obtained results shall be transformed into empirical mathematical equations using curve fitting techniques with the help of EXCEL program to help predict the properties at any blending ratio and develop optimum fuel blend to be used in CI engines. Moreover, optimization and modelling of biogas production is targeted to find the best ratio for biogas production by applying the genetic algorithm. This project is believed to reflect the huge potential of recycling waste to energy.
