ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to reveal the effect of biochar obtained from chicken litter on important agricultural characteristics and yield in different sunflower varieties. The study, conducted in the form of a field trial, was carried out in the Eastern Mediterranean Agricultural Research Institute's trial area in Adana during the summer main crop sunflower growing season of 2020.

The trial was established on May 12, 2020 with three iterations according to the "Trial Pattern of Divided Plots in Random Blocks". In the trial, common oil planted of the region such as LG5542 CL, MAY M96CL 02, and P64LC108 were used. Chicken litter biochar, our supporting material, was used. Chicken litter biochar used in the trial was obtained from Yeditepe University Engineering Faculty Genetics and Bioengineering Department. Chicken litter biochar was applied in three different doses (Control, 500kg/da, 1000kg/da, 1500kg/da). In the study, it was determined, in all sunflower varieties, according to biochar application dose; the number of flowering days were 45.0 - 49.0 days, physiological maturity periods were 113.7 - 120.0 days, self-fertilization rates were 4.11 - 5, natural plant heights were 118.1 - 140.3 cm, normal plant height were 151.47 - 177.0 cm, stem thicknesess were 0.82 - 1.50 cm, plate diameters were 7.3 - 22.2 cm, thousand grain weights were 66.3 - 85.6 g, grain yields were 366.7 - 475.6 kg/da, internal ratios were 72.22 - 74.17 % , seed oil ratios were 37.3 - 45.5%, protein ratios were 8.0 - 18.2 kg/da, and oil yields were 136.7 - 208.1 kg/da. According to the results of the research, the highest mean value 475.6 kg/da in term of seed yield was found in MAY M96CL 02 variety’s from control parcels where nothing was applied. In terms oil rate in the seed, the highest value %41.5 was has been detected in the P64LC108 variety in the 1500 kg/da chicken litter biochar application. In term oil yield in the seed the highest value 184.1 kg/da was found in the MAY M96CL 02 variety in its 1500 kg/da group application. In terms of the characters examined, it was concluded that it would be beneficial to continue the study as a trial for at least two years under different application time and dose conditions, since the differences between the varieties and the differences between chicken litter biochar applications were generally not statistically significant or inconsistent.
