Turkısh and Foreign Students Comparison of Internet Addiction, Quality of Life and Physical Activity Levels

This article investigates the differences between Turkish and foreign high school students living in Kayseri in terms of internet addiction, quality of life and physical activity.

15-20 year-old high school students in Kayseri participated in the study. The participants consisted of 700 students in total including Turkish 350 and international students 350. Questionnaire consisting of 4 seations was administered to the volunteer students. “Demographics”, “Internet Addiction Scale”, “SF-36 Quality of Life Scale” and “International Physical Activity Scale-Long Form” take part in the questionnaire. Respondents were stated as 59.19±10.523 kg and 168±7.902 cm. All statistical procedures comparing data have suggested a significant difference between the participants internet addiction and all the other subcategories (loss of control, desire of being online and problems in social relations) (p<0.05). Findings suggest that there is a significant difference between the relation quality of life and physical function, social, social function, role constraint based on emotional problems, mental health, pain and finally general health conditions (p<0.05). There is no significant difference among physical activity levels according to the findings (p<0.05). Data analysis of the study were highlighted as mean, standard deviation and percentages. Comparison of the multi-groups was conducted in Mann Whitney U Test and Kruskal Wallis-H Test. Kruskal Wallis one-way ANOVA was applied to check variance homogeneity. Data were evaluated in SPSS 22.0 statistics software program and p<0.05 was accepted as significant.

As a result, the article sheds light upon the negative effects of internet addiction. Parents and teachers need to be educated about efficient use of internet and students should became conscious in terms of internet use.
