Examining the Scientific Attitudes of Secondary School Fifth Grade Students: Mixed Method

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to examine the scientific attitude levels of fifth grade students in terms of different variables (success scores in science course, participation in science festivals, scientific literacy status).

In the research, the sequential descriptive pattern of the mixed method was preferred; the research was conducted using the screening pattern of the quantitative research method and the phenomonology pattern of the qualitative research method. In the collection of quantitative data, Keçe et al. (2020) "Scientific Attitude Scale" was used. The data obtained were analyzed with the SPSS 22.0 program. The validity was determined by scope, structure and criterion validity and the reliability was determined by Cronbach's Alpha coefficient. LISREL 8.7 program was used to perform confirmatory factor analysis on the construct validity. Then, the data obtained were evaluated in accordance with the answers given by the students and the necessary assumptions were provided and the result was reached. The comparison of scientific attitudes between the variables was carried out using one-way ANOVA and independent sample t-test dec in the qualitative part of the study, a semi-structured interview was conducted with nine students to get their views on the scientific attitudes of fifth-graders.

According to the results of the research, it has been determined that the attitude towards science does not constitute a significant difference in both qualitative and quantitative analyses in terms of success scores in science course, participation in science festivals and scientific literacy.
